- Course Title - Medical Services (MS) 1 Training
- Course Duration - 2 hours
- Course Description - This 2 hour course is designed for pre-hospital emergency medical staff, including EMT-B, EMT-O, AMR, Police, Fire, and other pre-hospital personnel, who may be required to prepare for and manage a radiologically contaminated patient.
- Course Objective - (1) Radiation Basics: basic radiation concepts, including exposure, contamination, health effects and radiation protection; (2) Emergency Planning: the effects of ionizing radiation on the human body and the types of radiation injuries; (3) Dosimetry and KI: facility specific review of the required radiation exposure monitoring devices and potassium iodide administration; (4) Vehicle Preparation: key roles, tasks and preparation for the transport of a contaminated patient; (5) Staff Preparation: use of standard precautions and anti-contamination clothing (PPE) and application of required dosimetry devices; (6) Survey Instruments: types, purpose and operation of various types of radiological survey instruments and dosimetry; (7) Patient Decontamination: methods, materials and procedures required for managing various types of patient contamination scenarios; (8) Post-Incident Activities: the process of termination of the emergency phase and facility restoration.
